Where bold print and color meets organic production- this is where you’ll find Winter Water Factory, a Brooklyn based manufacturing and design company of children’s apparel. Their organic cotton, naturally dyed items for babies and kids are made in the U.S. and boast beautiful textile prints. Whimsical and unique, they will delight a baby and his or her parents too.
The company was founded in 2003 by Stefanie Lynen, and later joined by her husband of 12 years, Todd Lynen. Stefanie and Todd strive to leave behind a healthier planet for the babies they dress. Their mission is simple: “To show that a company can be successful with American-made products and sustainable manufacturing - and give people good jobs and great products along the way.”
Stefanie is a self-taught designer who discovered her passion for product design when a university exchange program brought her to New York City in 1995. After finishing her degree in Medicine in Germany, Stefanie returned to New York to pursue a creative career and indulge in her lifelong obsession with textiles and surface design with a silk screening studio.
We made everything we could think of out of our screen-printed fabrics, but in the end, we loved designing for kids the most.
What Stefanie and Todd love most about the children’ industry is the freedom to create pieces that kids would love, “It gives us the room to be playful and have fun,” Stefanie says. She sketches most of her prints on the subway with inspiration hailing from vintage children’s books, interesting shapes and textures or quirky wallpapers.
All of Winter Water Factory’s clothing, made from 100% organic cotton, is sewn only ten blocks from their printing studio in Brooklyn. The company is named for a childhood game Stefanie and her sister would play in a small German town. While she once bottled melted snow and sold it to their parents as “winter water”, Stefanie has brought her creativity and appreciated for natural resources into a new ‘grown-up’ company, but kept the name Winter Water Factory.
