Everyone has that one amazing piece of jewelry from a loving family member - whether it be an aunt, mother, or grandmother. The sentimental value of that piece to you is the same feeling that inspired Alana Blank and Rachel Lavipour to start their own jewelry business, named after Alana’s Grandmother Phyllis and Aunt Rosie.
When Alana started making jewelry seven years ago, the modern direction of her label strayed from the vintage aesthetic of her grandmother’s jewelry. Her solution was to make chic, everyday pieces that could be layered with both modern and vintage favorites already in many women’s jewelry boxes, including that of Sloan, Rachel and Alana’s fictional brand guru. Named after the effortlessly cool girls from Entourage and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sloan is the quintessential Phyllis + Rosie girl, and her character story helps Rachel and Alana make design decisions. “Whenever Alana’s makes a new product, we ask, ‘would Sloan wear this?’”, says Rachel. Sloan’s presence keeps their designs on track of the casual yet chic aesthetic.
Alana’s inspiration comes from the everyday: architecture, street style, and anything different or interesting that she may see. Recently, she’s been extremely successful with hammered jewelry and layering necklaces, but now she’s moving into larger, bolder pieces. Once she’s drawn a design, she creates her own sample. “I mix and match metals…there’s fire involved and it gets a little crazy,” says Alana. After Rachel and Alana each wear the piece for a few minutes, they decide whether or not to launch it to the next phase - finding materials.
Sourced from New Mexico and New York, all Phyllis + Rosie metals are carefully inspected for quality control. Using either sterling silver or 14k gold, the jewelry is manufactured entirely by hand, and, amazingly, all in New York City. Alana says, “we are so close to the process that we don’t ever want it to change.”
Since starting Phyllis + Rosie, Alana and Rachel have learned a lot from starting a business in New York City. Not only are they committed to creating amazing product, but these two women also believe in treating people right. “Along the way, we’ve come across people that have not always been the nicest to us, but we’ve still taken the high road, and it’s come back to us full circle,” says Rachel. “We get to do something we love for a living, and we don’t take that for granted.”
