Known as “the pencil with the ultimate cult following”, the Blackwing 602 was produced by Eberhard Farber in the 1930s. The Blackwing 602 was used by many Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Academy Award winners, such as Chuck Jones, John Steinbeck, and Quincy Jones. Originally sold for 50 cents, after being discontinued in 1998, devoted followers began paying as much as $40 per pencil. Palomino founder and CEO, Charles Berolzheimer, reintroduced the one-of-a-kind pencil in 2011.
The production of the Blackwing 602 begins in the United States with cedar from California and Oregon. The pencils are then sent to Japan for the best quality graphite. Lastly, they are tipped, finished, and packaged in Stockton, California. The uniquely shaped eraser is replaceable and comes in additional colors for individuals who wish to customize their pencils.
