Inspired by nature, surf, and music, Masumi Hayashi and Ryu Iida started Lio & Linn, combining mediums to create natural shapes for beautiful, handmade objects.

They met through a shared hair stylist and soon realized that while their tastes were the same, their skills were not. Masumi was making jewelry at the time and Ryu was as a wood worker. Thy decided to collaborate and experiment with their different mediums.

The Making of a Nest Wall Pocket

For Ryu and Masuimi, their favorite part of the design process is exchanging ideas and experimenting with materials. “The most fun time is when we find small or simple ideas that might become a good idea. Then we start experimenting with different materials in a lot of ways until we both think “We got it!,” Ryu explains of working on Lio & Linn. “It’s the most exciting moment of designing.”

Everything is sourced in the U.S and handmade by the duo. They prefer organic materials like wood and stone, so each item has unique characteristics. “We see materials very carefully, touch it, feel it and decide the best way to use it one by one,” Ryu says. Giving each item time and attention makes their objects exceptionally special.

“I’m going to see the world” is their motto, expressing an ambition to experience different cultures and incorporate them into Lio & Linn designs. Ryu and Masumi also hope that their products will sell worldwide and “inspire more people and make their lives happier.”
