“Bali always wakes up early.” For the co-founders and creative force behind the Bali-based, Paris-inspired jewelry brand Cooperative de Creation, all it takes is a morning swim, a cup of tea for Mathias and a mug of cappuccino for Mélanie before they head to the office.
Prior to launching Cooperative de Creation, Mathias Chaize established a jewelry label in Paris, featuring braiding, beads and fine chains that convey a bohemian sensibility, inspired by his travels to Indonesia and time spent working alongside artisans in Bali. Mélanie Morin was working in Paris as a fashion designer when the two first met. “We fell in love, packed our bags and moved to Bali to realize our dreams: to live and work in a peaceful place. Then we decided to combine creativity and vision. It was the perfect symbiosis for Cooperative de Creation.“
Every Cooperation de Creation item has a soul.
What started as a two-person operation has grown over five years into a family of twenty, spread across the headquarters, workshop, photo studio and three flagship stores. Cooperative de Creation’s collection now includes a captivating and detailed array of jewelry, ceramics, apparel, art and everything in between. The raw materials for their collection are sourced from Paris and locally in Bali. Production starts in the Cooperative de Creation workshop with making a sample by hand for each design, refining every detail before and after production, which is contracted to two local small factories.
“Bali is the perfect location for us, working with the Balinese seems to go effortlessly. They have the rich Hindu culture and start from an early age to ‘create’ for their Gods. They have a natural instinct for the arts; painting, music and making sculptures. All is very refined and in detail which is important in our brand too.” According to Mathias, Melanie, and the customers who visit their storefront, every Cooperation de Creation item has a soul, fostered by a connection to a simple vintage aesthetic. Mathias and Melanie find beauty in everything and everywhere, “We try to recreate something new without losing the soul from the past. Every item is as a souvenir, a little memento from the past and our travels.”
