In a dark age not long past, when chunky plastic laptops were more burden than fashion accessory, Clare Vivier saw a need. Working in TV production in France and sick of lugging equipment around all day in nondescript bags, she took out a sewing kit and put laptop pockets on a chic leather bag. Then she made a couple for friends. Vivier was destined for global demand and attention from collaborator Steven Alan and blogs like Fashionista, but it didn’t seem a sure thing in 2006. “I was completely self-funded and had no backing,” she explains. “I didn’t have previous experience in fashion or retail, and the thought of going overseas to produce was daunting.” But in 2008, she found a factory in Los Angeles and ran the business out of her home. She still has her flagship boutique in Silver Lake, where she lives.
French couture was always the inspiration.
The Clare Vivier look is classic with a twist. The bags begin with an idea and a material. Neutral leathers are dressed up with a simple splash of color. French couture was always the inspiration, as France is her second home. “Intimacy with our material is a large part of the success,” she says. “We’re very particular about the leather we use, we always pick things that feel good to the touch.”
“When we first started out, it was a lot of reclaimed leather. Those are limited in supply.” Now most of the leather comes from Italy, through small New York sellers. She lives and works among people who are as devoted to high quality and conscious production as she is: “The great thing about Silver Lake and L.A.— it’s very much a community, where everyone is helping each other and working for each other. People talk about carbon footprints, but everything being made right here in L.A. is amazing, and probably the best thing we can do for the environment is to stay local.“
