The Brand Story

Alice.D bags combine a modern look of clean lines and vibrant colors with the centuries-old art of Italian leather. Cofounders - and mother and daughter dynamic duo - Alice and Donatella got their start creating leather goods for brands in their native Milan before teaming up to launch their own line of beautiful Italian leather handbags. With Donatella’s experience in leather design and Alice’s background in economics, the two sought out Italian artisans to create their collection using time-honored techniques.

The bags begin with carefully measured and divided Tuscan leather

Though the brand has expanded, Alice.D remains deeply invested in preserving the authenticity and history of the Italian leather craft—the company’s original artisan passed away this year at the age of 88, and now his son has taken over his practice. Before he passed, his father taught him “everything he knew” about creating “timeless, classic bags for a luxury customer.”

The duo take their time selecting every material that goes into their handbags, seeking out the highest-quality Italian leather and other fabrics, touching and examining them firsthand. To make the bags, Alice.D enlists Italian crafters who employ the classic, authentic methods for which Italian leather goods are famous. The leather is naturally and locally tanned, and the entire process is chemical-free.

Alice and Donatella are always listening to their customers, brainstorming new colors and designs based on that feedback. For Zady, they made our Milano bags in custom colors for our customer: a continental, chic woman who runs from the office to the airport. She wants a beautiful but durable bag she can grab after breakfast to take to work, and then run from work to the gym, or perhaps from the gym to the airport. If these scenarios sound familiar, this bag may have been made for you.

Why Is Tuscan Leather So Soft?

Tuscan leather is the softest, most buttery in the world. Why? Well, in Italy, cows are grass-fed and do not have the stretch marks of the forced-fed cows from, say, the United States. As a result, the leather from Northern Italy is noted worldwide by luxury shoppers as being a premium product. If customers want to verify that their leather bags are from the Tuscan region, they can simply look for a symbol on the brand tab stating “The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium.” This consortium was founded in 1994 by 11 Tuscan tanneries.
